Body Jewelry and Tongue Rings Require Special Care
Caring for a Tongue Ring
A Tongue running through usually refers to piercing the tongue from the underside, upright through to exit from the surface of the tongue. Tongue piercing and tongue rings are one form of body piercing that is one of the most known in the Western world. It is achieved mostly directly through its center. Before piercing the positioning is readily seen clear and a clamp is used. Tongue rings used for tongue piercing is usually longer than the most commonly used tongue rings in order to leave room for the tongue to swell. Because of the tongue’s ability to heal very quickly, piercings can close in a matter or hours if you are not wearing a tongue ring.
To keep a tongue ring piercing free from infection the first thing one should not do is wash his or her mouth out with any type of listerine. This can cause soreness and discoloration to the piercing. After getting pierced the tongue will swell up to about twice its actual size and a discharge may come out from the wound, which is normal. Swelling will start decreasing in three to four days and go away totally in seven to eight. The tongue should be completely healed within 6-8 weeks. For that time, do not touch the tongue ring as touching and playing with the body jewelry can irritate the piercing. It is better not to eat hot or spicy foods as it would problematic and would obstruct the healing process. Eating small amount of either mashed bananas, mashed potatoes, cereal, cold soup, applesauce or rice is suited. Rinse mouth out before and after every meal or drink. Drinking coffee or alcohol should be stopped. Smoking should also be not allowed. If one must smoke be sure to rinse mouth before and after having a cigarette. Smoking too much will slow down the healing process and cause unpleasure. Do not use chewing tobacco or non-filter cigarettes.
After swelling goes down, cut back on your mouth rinsing. When the tongue is fully improved it is only necessary to rinse mouth out in the morning and evening. Usually, the piercer will use a longer tongue ring than is customary to pierce the tongue. If the bar of the tongue ring feels too long or too large, the tongue ring can be replaced as soon as the tongue has healed and the swelling has gone down. Do not remove the tongue ring before it is completely healed. After the tongue is healed, you may change the tongue ring yourself or ask a piercer to changed the tongue ring instead.
Always be sure to fully sterilize any body jewelry, especially tongue rings to prevent any infection. In many cases, after the tongue is fully healed a crown or hard sign will appear around the hole in the tongue near the tongue ring. This will generally go away within a month or two of the tongue being completely healed. Following these necessary steps will benefit in a quick and aesthetic improvement.
